The Essential Retirement Guide (RG)/Coming of Age (COA) and our printer use Macintosh computers to process and print all files. We print on high-quality coated, gloss, white paper (No 3). All contone images must be 300 dpi or better and line art 600 dpi or better.
Color Management: Embed a target profile of
U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2. All files and embedded graphics must be CMYK only. PMS/spot and RGB colors cannot be accepted.
File formats accepted:
- Acrobat PDF files with all fonts and graphics embedded are preferred: Acrobat Distiller settings. PDF version 1.2 (Acrobat 3.x) or PDF/X-1a compliant only. Note: Adobe InDesign/Illustrator users, do not send files containing CID fonts. Please refer to the Adobe Support Knowledgebase: Document 329611.
- JPG set to high-quality (maximum quality) no layers or clipping paths.
- TIFF with no layers or clipping paths. LZW compression is approved for electronic transmission.
Compressing your files: Please compress your files for transmission. The only exceptions are Adobe PDF files and JPG files. File compression serves several purposes: files are less likely to get corrupted in transit via the Internet; and it makes the overall file smaller so that it doesn't take you (or us) as long to transfer the files. See the links below to get the most appropriate compression software.
Aladdin Systems: Stuffit, Stuffit Lite and Stuffit Expander to compress and decompress Macintosh Sit files.
Winzip Computing, Inc.: Winzip to compress and decompress Windows Zip files.

Specifications for Submission of Materials for Publication
Photoshop is not a page layout program so please only use Photoshop files primarily for support files. In most cases, using Photoshop to set text will produce undesirable results.
Please scan color and grayscale photos at the size they will be used or larger at 300 dpi. Convert color photos to CMYK mode.
Please scan line art at the size it will be used in your ad at 600 dpi and at the size it will be used or larger.
Authors who scan their own photos assume responsibility for the quality of reproduction in the magazine.
Send your files as:
- JPG set to high-quality (maximum quality) no layers or clipping paths.
- TIFF with no layers or clipping paths. LZW compression approved for electronic transmission.
Art and photos downloaded from the Web should meet the above requirements for optimum output. Photos downloaded from Web pages that have been saved at low resolution (72 to 100 dpi) will not print clearly.
